Testiment from “Siddhartha” by Hermann Hesse::
"This," he said, handling it, "is a stone, and within a certain length of time it will perhaps be soil and from the soil it will become plant, animal or man . . . I do not respect and love it because it was one thing and will become something else, but because it has already long been everything and always is everything. I love it just because it is a stone, because today and now it appears to me a stone. I see value and meaning in each one of its fine markings and cavities, in the yellow, in the brown, in the hardness and the sound of it when I knock it, in the dryness or dampness of its surface . . . But I will say no more about it. Words do not express thoughts very well. They always become a little different; immediately they are expressed, a little distorted, a little foolish. And yet it also pleases me and seems right that what is of value and wisdom to one man seems nonsense to another."
Welcome!
We assume, typically, that the teacher should 'manage', in the sense of playing a strong leadership role in the classroom, but we should not let that obscure the social fact that 'no teacher teaches except by consent" (Cortis 1977:66), and that the learners' role, however compliant they may be, is still crucial.
"I wanted to build a platform where students could express their feelings, and experience the autonomy, awareness and authenticity of an online debate" David MEARNS- founder followthestone.com dmearns@gmail.com
"Followthestone.com" is a website dedicated to the students of Winston Smith and Mr Meursault. The site, named after the influences of David Mearns and his philosophy on life, aims to guide students of English currently studying with Smith and Meursault in Istanbul, Turkey. It is hoped that after some hard work and dedication to the project participants will be fully switched on to the site and contributions will be flooding in by "Sharing & Loving".
Site creator and designer Oya Mearns would welcome anyone wishing to contribute to the process and wants any materials based on the class content of lessons experienced by students through the Smith and Meursault Experience
